Plant It Forward

Volunteer FAQ’s

Who can volunteer?

All are welcome after they have completed the orientation and signed the release form. Groups must be prescheduled with the Volunteer Coordinator.

Can children or students volunteer?

All are welcome, including children over 6 (with adult supervision). Students over 16 can work independently (or in groups) with parental approval. Groups of students must be pre-scheduled and groups larger than 6 will require one accompanying adult for every 6 students.

How long is a shift?

We can use you for an hour or a full morning, but it will be good to coordinate that with the farmer that you are paired with that day.

What do I need to wear/bring?

We want you to be safe and healthy and since it’s hot so much of the year, wear temperature appropriate clothes, closed-toed shoes, gloves, a hat and sunscreen. Bring water, a snack and any tools you think will be helpful. We do not have a place to secure your valuables, so do not bring anything that could be lost.

Do you provide “Community Service” hours?

We can sign off on community service hours for students, but be sure to bring the document with you.

How do I find out about Volunteer Opportunities?

Contact Us and sign up for our e-newsletter. We send out periodic newsletters with Orientation dates, Group work days and special events and needs.

Can I have a part of your land to garden on?

Our mission is to provide economic opportunities for people who are creating a new life in Houston, so this land is their livelihood. There are other organizations that can help you find a place to create your own gardening opportunities. Thank you for your interest in our farm and the farmers. For the safe and efficient operations of Plant It Forward these volunteer guidelines may change from time-to-time. We look forward to seeing you on the farm or at one of our other volunteer activities soon!
